Transition
Harvard University
Hutchins Center for African and African American Research
Managing Editor
2010-2017 | Issues 103-125
Born in Africa and bred in the Diaspora, Transition is a unique forum for the freshest, most compelling, most curious ideas from and about the Black world. Since its founding in 1961 by the late Rajat Neogy, the publication developed a reputation for tough-minded, far-reaching criticism, both cultural and political.
"In immediate postcolonial Africa…the various decolonized or soon-to-be decolonized countries didn’t know too much about one another. [...] Transition was one of the instruments for bringing Africa together internally and turning the face of Africa towards the African diaspora as well."
--Wole Soyinka, in conversation with Tommie Shelby, former editors of Transition
