Working Title: Borderlands
Project type
SCREENPLAY | pilot, 1-hour drama
Concept
This historically-grounded narrative series is set in and around Helena, Montana and presents a multicultural vision of the 19th century American West, inspired by true stories.
“Some people only learn and come to understand, through fiction, the truth of the historical past.”
– Alison Eakle, Head of Fiction & Non-Fiction, Shondaland
“The West has been oversold and oversimplified … The West deserves a history that enfolds the complex landscape and the diverse peoples of this distinctively American region.” – Clyde A. Milner II
This series concept addresses Milner’s call by examining the multicultural histories of Helena, Montana Territory during the decades following the discovery of gold in Last Chance Gulch.
Borderlands is a narrative anthology television series (in development) that represents compelling moments in the histories and interactions of early Montana’s culturally diverse communities (1864–1900). While the end product is scripted drama, the development of this series concept is grounded in rigorous archival research and committed to authenticity in representing the historical events and figures of this period for broad audiences.
“Start asking each other, 'what is your history? How does your history interact with what I understand is my own place, my own people, my community, and my country?' ... I promise you these discussions will change you and that in turn will change our world.”
– Dr. Shelly Lowe (Diné), NEH Chair
