A mother and daughter explore the origins and meanings of a liminal trickster figure who appeared in their midst thirty years ago.
In the mid-1990s, dreading a faculty Halloween party "overrun with addicts and misogynists," my mother paired a Halloween mask with a vintage fur coat and went as The Gorilla.
No one recognized her. So began an alter ego that turned up at department functions, art events, and local parades. One hand was gloved and threw bananas or peanuts at people; the other, a deer foot, liked knocking things off countertops.
This wasn't performance art. How does Mom explain The Gorilla? And how might this trickster persona be understood, years later?
