On Saturday, I met up with "Tex" at the public radio station in Ann Arbor to play some of my Nashville bluegrass bootlegs over the air on his Country Western show. It was so much fun!! Thanks Tex! Now I want my own radio show!
Missoula > Yellowstone/Tetons > Wyoming > Colorado > Santa Fe > Austin > Luckenbach > San Antonio > New Orleans > Memphis > Nashville > Cleveland..... > Colorado
Monday morning, I left Michigan at 7am to meet Dad at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland by 11:00. He and I had a great day touring the museum, and I enjoyed hearing his memories of favorite bands and gone-by eras.
I particularly enjoyed seeing all the hand-written song lyrics by Paul Simon, Billy Joel, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix--and basking in the glow of the rock 'n roll rebellion. By age 21, Jim Morrison was playing stadium shows in Miami despite the fact that his father had encouraged him to give up music for "lack of talent."
I never would've had the balls...I guess I've always been the kind of person who depends too much on the approval/advice of others...the courage and commitment of these musicians to their own voice and vision--many of whom were dead by my age--is beyond inspiring. Though I don't aspire to being a rock star,
I've realized more than anything else on this trip that life is a choice between security and adventure, between stagnation and growth. About finding your most authentic form of self-expression, and being true to it above all else.
Growth involves heading straight into the unknown, which demands every ounce of strength and courage. It immediately challenges everything you've "established" and know yourself to be. You can sit comfortably with what you know--safe and secure--or you can take enormous risk, challenging the boundaries of your life and identity, for the possibility of epiphany...and another and another.
I've discovered that, for me, the benefit is worth the risk.
Thanks for being with me on this trip. I'll now be in Colorado until the end of July cooking for Tibetan monks on retreat. Not sure whether I'll have internet access or not...I'll be back in New York by early August. I look forward to hearing from you!
