Hello friends,
A sadness came over me yesterday as I left Cleveland, OH...the last stop on my whirlwind musical tour of America.
I've had such an incredible journey and it's very hard to leave it behind. I don't miss New York. I don't miss my apartment or my stuff. Aside from being a bit tense from lack of physical activity, I think I could live on the road (or maybe in a trailer at the Armadillo Farm!).
I can leave my routine very easily...and I think I needed to prove it to myself with this adventure.
Let's see...I left you in Nashville. I drove up through horse country Kentucky--beautiful rolling green hills, black barns and white fences. The western part of the state was one of the most beautiful stretches on my entire trip.
I spent the evening in Cincinnati with Kristen's friends Darren and Kirsty who took me to the Blue Wisp downtown for some fantastic live jazz. In the morning, after a hearty country breakfast, I was on the road to Detroit.
What a pleasant, relaxing weekend! The Concert of Colors was taking place in Chene Park, with an amphitheater right on the water, featuring about 35 bands over three days--completely free.
On Friday night I met up with Teddy to see an incredible performance by Femi Kuti, whose three scantily-clad dancers shook and gyrated for over an hour and a half without stop. It was quite a show!
Over the course of the weekend, we saw Cheb Mami, Angelique Kidjo, WAR, Tom Tom Club, and The Specials. WAR stole the show with an outstanding performance--probably the best of my entire trip. It inspired me to go out and buy a tambourine the next day at guitar center and, damn it, I'm going to become the world's most prolific and sought-after tambourinist--just wait and see. At the festival, I also chatted for a while with Orlando Westbrook, an author who was creating a dictionary of HipHop terminology. [I had offered him some NYC connections, and ended up being thanked in the HipHoptionary!]
