Yesterday, five small deer crossed in front of my car in a suburban neighborhood. They cut a diagonal path from a marshy park, across a street, through someone's yard, over a sidewalk, into some traffic, and up a hillside.
Their clear intention and complete disregard of man-made boundaries (sidewalks, streets, private property) showed me how these structures guide our behavior before we even realize we might have a choice.
I will probably now ask once in a while: How would a deer do it?
