Next day, it was on to New Orleans (that was yesterday). Stopped in Lafayette at Murphs Old Time Grocery for Shrimp Po Boys. Oh. My. God. I've died and gone to Louisiana.
We met up with Matt, our host, who just happens to live in the old J&M Studios building in the French Quarter--home to many early recordings of Ray Charles, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis. In this very building where I'm sitting right now.
Matt and his beautiful friend Donna (who used to tan Alligator hides with her family as a child) took us around the French Quarter for a plethora of musical experiences and a stop at Cafe du Monde for Beignets and Chicory Coffee--I've got great pictures of me covered in powdered sugar.
We ended up closing the Mother-in-Law Lounge, a shrine to Ernie K-Doe who had just passed away that day or the day before. His family and friends had gathered there to remember him.
More food exploration at the famous Mother's (so full!) and afterwards we stumbled upon a second line and followed, dancing all the way to the cemetery.
Missoula > Yellowstone/Tetons > Wyoming > Colorado > Santa Fe > Austin > Luckenbach > San Antonio > New Orleans > Memphis > Nashville > Detroit > Cleveland..... > Colorado
Tonight we're heading out for some Gumbo and to hear the Rebirth Brass Band at Tipitina's with a stop early on at Preservation Hall. I'm overwhelmed. Wouldn't you be?
Wish you could be here!

p.s. I was unsatisfied with my previous Armadillo description and have come up with a fairly good analogy of what one feels like. It's like an over-inflated hot-water bottle--rubbery and squishy--or maybe more like a football filled with jello... ;-)
